Russia's losses in the war with Ukraine amounted to about 220 thousand people killed

About 50 thousand lawsuits have been filed in courts to declare a serviceman dead or missing

By August 2025, Russian losses in the war with Ukraine amounted to about 220 thousand people killed. This conclusion was reached by Meduza* and Mediazona**, after studying data on losses from the named list of the deceased and the registry of inheritance cases.

In the named list of the deceased, which journalists maintain from open sources (obituaries, media reports), by the end of August 2025 there were 125,681 people. However, this number does not reflect all losses, as there is not information about all the deceased. Therefore, calculating the real number of deaths is possible thanks to this list and the state registry of inheritance cases. Currently, the number of deceased is 220 thousand Russians.

In addition, as calculated by Mediazona, by the beginning of August, about 50 thousand lawsuits were filed in Russian courts to declare a serviceman dead or missing.

The exact number of lawsuits is difficult to name, as courts do not publish decisions and conceal applicants in such cases. As the publication notes, commanders of military units are massively sending out lawsuits — this way they clear the personnel lists of those who went missing on a combat mission.

Currently, courts recognize about 250 people as missing or dead per day — this is comparable to the level of daily losses at the front.
