Three Russian MiG-31 fighters violated Estonian airspace

2025.09.19

In Europe, this was seen as a serious escalation on NATO's eastern border

As reported by Politico, citing informed sources, NATO airspace was breached by MiG-31 aircraft capable of carrying the Russian hypersonic missile "Kinzhal." During the incident, they initially flew towards the capital Tallinn and then circled for about 12 minutes until Italian F-35s stationed in the region were scrambled to intercept.

"Russia has already violated Estonian airspace four times this year, which is unacceptable in itself, but today's violation, during which three fighters entered our airspace, is unprecedentedly blatant. The constantly growing challenge to borders and Russian aggression must be met with a swift increase in political and economic pressure," said the country's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

Tallinn summoned the acting chargé d'affaires of Russia in Estonia for a conversation.

The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, who led the Estonian government until July last year, called this event an "extremely dangerous provocation."

"Putin is testing the resolve of the West. We must not show weakness," she wrote on social network X.
